Because EU law now requires it. Under DAC8, the EU's tax reporting framework for crypto-assets in force since 1 January 2026, Venga must collect and verify the tax residency details of every user, including users who completed identity verification a long time ago. Being asked for this information does not mean there is a problem with your account.
What exactly are you asking me for?
Depending on what we already have on file, we may ask you to:
- Confirm or declare your country (or countries) of tax residence
- Provide your Tax Identification Number (TIN) for each country of tax residence
- Confirm your date of birth and residential address
This is called a tax residency self-certification, and it is a one-time process unless your circumstances change (for example, you move to another country).
I verified my identity already. Why again?
Standard identity verification (KYC) and DAC8 cover different information. When you verified your account, we confirmed who you are. DAC8 additionally requires us to record where you are tax resident and your TIN, which were not part of onboarding before 2026.
We are also required to check that your tax information is consistent with the rest of your profile, which is why we may occasionally ask you to confirm details you provided in the past.
Who has to do this, and by when?
Everyone. All EU-based crypto platforms are subject to the same requirement:
| User type | What happens |
|---|---|
| New users | The self-certification is part of account creation since 1 January 2026 |
| Existing users | We will contact you during 2026 with a request to complete it. The regulation requires all existing users to be certified before 1 January 2027 |
Your notification will show the specific deadline that applies to you. Completing the process only takes a few minutes.
If we do not receive your information: EU rules oblige us to send reminders and, after that, to temporarily restrict buying, selling, swapping, and transferring crypto-assets until the information is provided. We want to avoid that as much as you do, so please respond as soon as you are contacted.
How will Venga contact me?
We will only contact you about this by email from our official addresses. Be cautious of imitations:
- We will never ask for your password, 2FA codes, seed phrase, or private keys.
- We will never ask you to transfer funds as part of any verification.
- If you are unsure whether a message is from us, you can always reach out to us at support@venga.com.
What happens with this information?
It is reported once a year to the Spanish tax administration (AEAT), which shares it automatically with the tax authority of your country of tax residence, as required by DAC8. You can read exactly what is reported, when, and how your data is protected in our DAC8 FAQ.
